Susannah Jane Dockery

A John Cooper, said to be a Union Army officer married Susannah Sizemore in DeKalb County, Alabama on September 6, 1869.  Susannah moved to Arkansas to to be near her married children from her first marriage to William Sizemore.  She drew a pension in John Cooper's name already in Albabama and is reported to have been buried in a small cemetery in or near Pinall (Searcy County), Arkansas.  Could this be the same as the Captain J. Cooper on the Nesbit Muster Roll in Dade County, Georgia?  Apparently, yes.  Susan's children by William Sizemore are foudn in the John Cooper household in Marion County, Shellmound, in 1870 as Jackson Cooper 15, Mary Cooper, 14, James Cooper 12, and John Cooper 9

Marriage September 6, 1869 DeKalb County Alabama

Susan Dockery

Susan was sold or traded as a Bond servant at a young age to the “Dockery’s”. She took their last name as her own.

The Dockerys’ lived on the Tennessee River near Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tn.

One day as she was washing clothes on the Tennessee River, this was at flood time. She slipped and fell in the river. She was carried to the main stream of the river.

There happened to be two Sizemore brothers on the river fishing. One of them was William Calvin Sizemore. The brothers were ½ Breed Chickasaw Indian.

They saw Susan struggling in the water and went to rescue her. She was taken to their village in Valley Head, DeKalb, Alabama.

William took her to his dwelling.

Against the advice of the elders, he took her as his wife.

As told by John M. Sizemore
